CRICKET IN ENGLAND
KENT BEATS CHAMPIONS THREE DOUBLE CENTURIES LONDON. Aug. 22 The outstanding feature of the latest series of English county cricket matches was the defeat of the champion county, Yorkshire, by Kent. Although Yorkshire required only 133 to win, the side was dismissed for 88, Freeman taking six wickets for 51. t There were three double centuries by Leyland (Yorkshire), Cook (Sussex) and Mead (Hampshire). Details of the matches are: — KENT V. YORKSHIRE Kent: First innings, 332 (Valentine 90, Woolley 86); second, 133 (Verity nine for 59). . Yorkshire: First innings, six tor 666, declared (Leyland 210); second, 88 (Freeman six for 51). Kent won by 44 runs. MIDDLESEX V. SURREY Middlesex: First innings, 188 (Fender five for 55); second, 289 (Hendren 152 not out). Surrey: First innings, 231 (Gregory 91); second, six for 247 (Block 91, Hobbs 62). Surrey won by four wickets. LEICESTER V. WARWICK Leicester: First innings, 196; second, four for 235 (Berry 82). Warwick: First innings, eight for 373, declared (Wyatt 116). Warwick won on the first innings. NORTHANTS V. ESSEX Northants: First innings, 176 (Timms 86; Nichols five for .46); second, 195 (Smith four for 39). Essex: First innings, 261 (Crawley 108; Matthews six for 52); second, three for 112. Essex won by seven wickets.
GLAMORGAN V. SOMERSET Glamorgan: First innings, eight for 373, declared (Dyson 104, E. Davies 82, Duckfleld 84 not out). Somerset: First innings, seven .for 204. The match was drawn. SUSSEX V. WORCESTER Sussex: First innings, nine for 468, declared (Cook 214, Wensley 118). Worcester: First innings, 318 (Walters 103, Gibbons 83); follow-on, 77 (Tate four for 31, James Langridge five for 36). Sussex won by an innings and 73 runs. LANCASHIRE V. NOTTS Lancashire: First innings, 230 (Voce eight for 55). Notts: First innings, three for 241 (Keeton 136 not out). Notts won on the first innings. HAMPSHIRE V. DERBY • Hampshire: First innings, 478 (Mead 227). Derby: First innings, 187 (Lee 81; Hill five for 23); follow-on, seven for 144. Hampshire won on the first innings. WEST INDIES ELEVEN WIN FOR GLOUCESTERSHIRE LONDON, Aug. 22 In tho cricket match between the West Indies eleven and Gloucestershire tho county (570 and three for 73) beat the visitors by seven wickets. The losers scored 271 and 371 (Grant 109). Sinfield took seven wickets for 149.
