HOCKEY SEASON

THE TOURING TEAM NINE MATCHES ARRANGED RECORDS OF THE PLAYERS The Auckland touring hockey team will leave by train this morning on » 14 days' tour, during which it will play nine representative matches. With the exception of a few of the more experienced members, the team is composed of young players, the average age being 23, but of the 14 playera, five have won senior representative honours and six others have played in junior representative games. M. J. Bay, captain of the team, and I{. A. Phillpotts, vice-captain, are both Now Zealand representative players. The Auckland Hockey Association has granted the team full representative status, and it is expected to come through the tour with a good record. The team ,will arrive at Te Awarautu to-day and will play Waipa during the afternoon, leaving later for Stratford. To-morrow the team will meet Taranaki at Stratford, and on Saturday a match against Wanganui will be played at Wanganui. The remainder of the tour will be carried out according to the following schedule of matches:— Monday, Feilding; Tuesday, Manawatu, at Palniorston North; Wednesday, August 30, Dannevirke; August 31, Hawke's Bay, at Napier; September 2, Nelson, at Nelson, as a curtain-raiser to the North Island-South Island match; September 4, Motueka. The team will return to Auckland to-day fortnight. , Phillpotts' Long Experience Some fine hockey records have been Jnade by members of the team. M. J. Bay, centre-forward for Papatoetoe, started playing at the Auckland Grammar School in 1924, and he has played Benior grade since 1927 for the St. Luke's, University and Papatoetoe Clubs, and' for the Dunedin Training College. He represented Otago and the South Island in 1930, obtained New Zealand University "blues" in 1931 and 1932, represented Auckland in 1932 and was a member of the 1932 Dominion team in Australia. R. A. Phillpotts, left wing for University, has a long and varied hockey career. He first played the, game in 1910, represented Wairarapa Schools in 1913-14, Wairarapa in 1915-16-17, North Otago in 1918-19, Wellington juniors in 1920, and from that date until the present year has consistently won provincial repreaentativo honours, having in various years played for Wellington, Taranaki, Waikato and Auckland. He toured Australia with the 1923 New Zealand team and also represented New Zealand in 1929. Although, this is only his second year of hockey, J. Chadwick, Training College's goalkeeper, has shown himself a first-class player. Last year ho was a fullback for Wellington Training College. H. N, Williams, right fullback, has represented Auckland every year rince 1928, except 1930. F. S. Clark, St. Luke's left fullback, reached senior grade in 1928, was an Auckland B representative in _1931, and gained full representative honours the last two years. /' Promising Young Players W- Heard, right half for Somerville, leached senior grade this year for the first time. He was an Auckland junior representative last year. V. S. Pickens, centre-half for Training College, started hockey seven years ago and for five

Last year he gained junior representative honours, this year being his first in senior hockey. A. L. Hedges, lefthalf for Somerville, -was a member of the Mount Eden senior team from 192 a to 1931, but last year rejoined Somerville. He represented Auckland in 1931 and 1932, being a member of tho 1931 Auckland team which brought back the New Zealand Challenge Shield from Canterbury. P. R. Glanville, right wing forward for Somerville, first played hockey in 1925 at Cambridge, and in 1928 represented Waikato. He gained Auckland & honours in 1931 and 1932. C. M. Torbet, inside right for St. Luke's, played for the Auckland Grammar School in 1924 and 1925. Ho joined St. Luke's in 1930 and ; the following year was selected as a junior representative. M. .Vipond, centre-forward for St. Luke's after several Tower grade representative honours, senior grade last year, and has shown himself one of Auckland's most promising players. C. B. Eloyd, inside left for Training College, Was a member with Pickens of the Mount Albert Grammar hockey teams. He was a iunior representative in 1931 and last year, this year being his first in first grade. R. J. Dunning, right half for Omaha, has represented Rodney from 1930 until this year, and was a country representative in, 1931, 1932 and this year. T. G. Miller, left fullback for Training College, started hockey only last year for the college's second grade team, but he has shown splendid promise in senior grade this season. The presfent tour is the first of its kind since 1922. Mr. H. E. Watts will travel with the team as joint manager find referee, and Mr. W. Newsham, sole Selector to tho association, will travel •is joint manager and selector. Positions in Lower Grades The lower grade championship competitions are now reaching finality. In tho second grade, with three matches yet to be played, Wesley has 22 points; Auckland Grammar, 21; St. Luke's, 16; Grammar Old Boys, 16; Mount Eden, 13; University, 6; Somerville, 4; PapatoetoQ, 2; University B, 2, In the third grade St. Luke's has 22 points; Somerville, 2.1; Mount Albert Grammar, 16; Grammar Old Boys, 16; University, 10; Mount Eden, 6; Training 6; "Wesley, 5. One scries of games remains to be played, and Mount Albert Grammar and Training College are a game behind the rest. Auckland Grammar won tho fourth ferade with'2l points. Papatoetoe scored U0; St. Luke's, 10; and Somerville, 7. The fifth grade contest, which is also concluded, is headed bv Mour.t Albert Grammar, with 16 points. Auckland Grammar A scored 10, Papatoetoe 7, nnd Auckland Grammar B 3.
