NIGHT ON MOUNTAIN

TWO TE AWAMUTU BOYS OVERTAKEN BY-DARKNESS [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT "J TE AWAMUTU, Monday Two brothers, John and Robert Bevin, aged 16 and 15 respectively, members of the To Awamutu Boy Scouts, who left home yesterday morning to join a party of Frankton Scouts to climb Pirongia Mountain, spent the night in the open. The boys failed to make contact with the party, but carried on, only to find darkness overtaking them on the return journey. They slept in fern on the edge of the bush rather than risk accidents trying to get down the mountain side at night. This morning they got their bearings and reached a farm house safely. They were following the road home when a, relief party headed by their father met them. Both boys are experienced Scouts and know the locality, but their non-arrival late at night occasioned concern. Telephone inquiries failed to locate them, so the father motored up to the top of the road at night and again this morning. The boys say they made a comfortable bivouac in the fern and the heavy rain after midnight did not inconvenience them greatly.
