FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of August 18S3; — The present demand for labour in Auckland is likely , rather to be increased than diminished for some time to come, independently of the works to be undertaken by the city with the new loan, and the large building operations contemplated, a very large sum is about to be spent on works connected with the .harbour. These are as follows:—Dock, £120,000: Hobson Street Wharf, £6000; Queen Street nll-ing-in, £6000: Mechanics' Bay reclamation (if undertaken), £18,000; new tees, £6OOO. The reclamation for the freezing company will cost £3O, UW. Thus the undertakings referred t0 above will total £186,000 for works connected with the harbour, and the bulK of this will be for labour. Messrs. Hunt and White, railway contractors, have commenced work no the Te Aroha station site, and at other points along the line. _ , The clock for the Wellington Office tower, which Messrs. Littlejonn and Son have contracted to construct for £B6O, is guaranteed not to vary more than 10 seconds a week. Arrangements have now been concluded for running two daily ®Pf cia ' trains between Melbourne and Sydney on five days in the week. This arrangement will probably commence on September 1.
