FIRE PROTECTION

ACTION AT NEW LYNN

board to be approached NO LOCAL FACILITIES A decision to risk the Metropolitan Fire Board to provide firo protection in the New Lynn district without capital expenditure was made by tho New Lynn Borough Council at a meeting last evening. "I think it is the best way to deal with an awkward situation," said the Mayor, Mr. G. Lawson, in suggesting this course. He said it should bo possible to secure similar protection to that obtained in Mangere, where about £75, with the addition of £5 for every fire, was paid to the board annually. The charge to New Lynn, a smaller area, would probably be less than that figure. The Avondale fire station was practically on the boundary between tho city and New Lynn, and Mr. Lawson did not think it would bo asking very much to request tho board to include New Lynn. There was an adequate water supply. "It would be impossible to provide a fire station in New Lynn in the present circumstances, as the cost would be far too great," he added. "What is be gained by obtaining firo protection?" asked Mr. A. Drury. He did not think it would result in lower insurance premiums. Mr. S. G. Hards said it would be satisfactory to know there was protection from fire.

"There are things people cherish which they would not like destroyed by fire," said Mr. Lawson. "Personally, unless the safety of my familywere menaced, I would say, 'Let the house burn.' "

Mr. Hards: We would probably all say the same thing. "Here is a firo brigade superintendent right away," remarked a member when an application for the position of a brigadesman in the event of a station being established was received from an ex-naval petty officer.
