BOXING CHAMPIONS

AUCKLAND TITLE BOUTS RESULTS OF FIRST NIGHT MANY INTERESTING CONTESTS PROVINCE' WELL REPRESENTED The annual Auckland provincial boxing championships were commenced at the Town Hall last evening in the presence of a good attendance of spectators. Owing to the large number of entries the programme was started shortly aftej- 6.30 p.m. and the last bout was not decided until nearly midnight. The competitors came from various parts of the Auckland Province. S. Brown, the Warkworth middle-weight,

who made such a good showing against T. Shorter last year, was unable to appear, owing to having fractured his * nose at Kaikohe. The standard was very good, the big majority of the bouts , being produfctive of scientific boxing. In other cases less scientific competitors displayed gameness, while a few of them afforded no end of amusement. J. McCuHock created a mild sensation by knocking down 11. Purdie, New Zealand Olympic representative, in the first round of their light-weight contest. He later rattled Purdie once or twice ; more with a similar blow, a left swing * to the jaw.'Purdie's science proved too much for his opponent in the succeeding rounds, in which McCulloch took a great deal of punishment. It. Williams and W. Young were responsible for a very clever display in the bantams, the last-named keeping . his hard-hitting opponent away for some time by first-class covering up and etrong leading with his left. Williams was not to be denied, however, ultimately getting past his opponent's de- ' fence for a knock-out. E. Estall demonstrated his ability to take punishment in his light-weight bout with It. Walker and, although well behind on points in the first two rounds, ho wiped off the deficit at the end by sound two-handed fighting. Ho had his opponent almost out at the gong. The officials were:—Referees, Messrs. R. Meale, N. McLean; judges, Messrs. G. Bush, E. A. Craig, F. Burns, W. Luke, A. Joplin, R. W. Rugg; an- < noti'ncer, Mr. W.
