RETURN FROM AMERICA
FORMER THAMES RESIDENT After living in America for 21 years Mr. W. von Bernewitz, formerly of Thames, arrived at Auckland from New York yesterday by the Commonwealth and Dominion Lino motor-ship Port Freinantle. Mr. von Bernewitz was born at Thames, where his father was assayer at the Bank of New Zealand, and for four years he was on the staff of the Waihi Gold Mining Company. In 1900 Mr. von Bernewitz went to Australia and then to Borneo in connection with goldmining, arriving in America in 1912. In New York ho was assistant-editor of the Minos Handbook Annual, a reference book on mining. During his last 10 years in America he was in Pittsburg, whore ho was in the employ of the American Government, editing Mining Metallurgy and mine accident reports. Mr. von Bernewitz states a lot of research work is done in connection with the prevention of accidents in mines, because of the heavy compensation which has been paid in the past owing to the numerous accidents. From Pittsburg he was transferred to Washington, whero ho was employed at the head office of the United States Bureau of Mines. Mr. von Bernewitz's future movements are uncertain, but after spending some time in New Zealand he will probably proceed to Australia. He is accompanied by Mrs. von Bernewitz. During his absence from New Zealand Mr. Bernewitz received a copy of the Auckland Weekly News every week for 20 years.
