PENWOMEN'S LEAGUE

Lifo in Western Samoa! and Niue Island was the subject of a very interesting and instructive address given l by Mr. J. Caughley, late Director of Education, to tho members of tho Penwomen's League yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Carr Itollett, tho president, introduced Mr. Caughley, who, in discussing his subject pointed out that Niue island was part of New Zealand and tho Empire, and its inhabitants were dependent on us fcr the sale of their products. Ho spoke of the wonderful coral formation of tho'island, and the beauty of tho brilliantly-coloured under-water submarine gardens. Tho characteristics of tha natives, their generosity, and courtesy, their skill and handicrafts of all sorts, and tho fact that they were so far uncontaminated by civilisation, wore stressed by the speaker. At tho conclusion of his address many beautiful examples of hand-painted mats, and curios mado from coconuts and shells were displayed on the stage.
