PRINCES STREET FLATS
PROPOSED NEW BUILDINU LIMITED TO FOUR STOREYS DECISION OF CITY COUNCIL A height limit of four storeys for residential buildings in Princes Street, southward of Bowen Avenue, has been fixed by the City Council. The opinion of the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, expressed at a meeting of the council last evening, was that the better residential character of the street would thus be preserved, while a more appropriate environment for the University College building would also be provided. The question was raised during consideration of an application for a permit to erect a six-storey block of 48 self-contained flats on the site next to the Jewish Synagogue, now occupied by the "Ellesmere" boarding house. The city engineer said that in February, 1931, the council declined to grant a pern! it for a six-storey block of flats on another site in Princes Street, near Alfred Street. Regarding the present application, the width provided for the outer courts between the sides of the building and the boundaries of the site was short of the by-law requirements for sixstorey building, but in consideration of the fact that a light well 10ft. wide was provided for in the interior, preferable from the viewpoint of light and air for the internal corridors, this deficiency might reasonably be waived. The width provided for the outer corridors would more •than suffice for a four-storey block. The engineer's recommendation that the building should be confined to four storeys was adopted.
