WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Aka Aka held a guest, afternoon. Musical items, competitions and tea were enjoyed. Albany was linked recently with Dunmon, Essex, Women's Institute. Four new members were enrolled. Coroglen is giving a silver spoon to the'first women's institute baby. There was a talk on rose pruning. Glenbrook sent children's frocks from n competition to cost not more than 2s 6d, jars of jam and bottles of sauce to Auckland for the needy. Hobsonville at an open meeting enjoyed Miss L. Cranwell's lantern lecture on "Food Plants of the Polynesian People." The Dramatic Club staged a one-act play. Katikati enrolled new members. Mrs. G. Palmer lectured on " Child Welfare." Miss Kayle demonstrated Dennison wax work. Kaipara Flats welcomed a new member. Competition was for the best specimen of darning. Mrs. Coley demonstrated a simple method of skincuring. Matakohe decided to purchase material for .making up garments for the needy. The competition was the best article made from wallpaper. had Miss Sandilands, of Oparau demonstrating glove-making. A large sack of new clothing was sent to Sister Esther. At a social afternoon Mrs. C. Jenkins, who is leaving the district, was presented with a hearth rug. A box of cakes was sent to the City Mission bazaar. Moerewa had a demonstration of lampshade making by Miss Spence. The whistling competition caused merriment. A sack of clothing was sent to the district nurse. Ruawai held a social afternoon to farewell the president, Mrs. Griffin, who is leaving the district. A crystal necklet was presented to Mrs. Griffin by Mrs. Blanchfield on behalf of the members as a token of appreciation. Pamarama's first meeting was held at Mrs. Sharp's house. Mrs. Bagnall addressed the meeting on the aims and oljjects of the institute. Swanson had a very interesting demonstration of paper flower making by Miss Thomson. Several articles have been distributed from the community chest.
