CHILLED BEEF TRADE

DOMINIONS' OPENING SHIPMENTS TO CONTINUE CONDITIONS AT SMITHFIELD By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received July 27. 7.5 p.m.) LONDON. July 27 It is learned that the firm of Borthwicks, Limited, has arranged for a continuation of chilled beef shipments from New Zealand and Australia in the hope of achieving commercial success based on the profit made on the Port Fairy's shipment. Tho problem of the gas chilling method recently employed is to prevent the gas escaping. It is hoped to remedy this by increasing tho number of bulkheads in sliips in order to hermetically seal tho meat. It is understood that the specifications for the refrigerated ships recently ordered for the New Zealand and Australian trade provided for this. Although the prices of mutton and lamb have receded slightly from those of June, largely owing to the hot weather in England, the position at Sniithfield remains unexpectedly good. Large quantities arc still being sold. Tho outlook for beef, however, is worse. Frozen stocks are accumulating by thousands of quarters a week. Australia has secured a contract for September delivery of .'SOO tons of frozen beef for tho Belgian army at 2.} d a lb. This is above the Brazilian ([notation, but Brazil, at ljjd a lb. has secured tho October contract.
