THE VICE-REGAL VISIT
So deep and widespread has been Auckland's appreciation of the kindly share taken by Their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe in many matters of citizen interest, during their prolonged stay here, that it calls for public expression. This stay has been, unusually long, a fact in itself prompting acknowledgment of general pleasure. But it is Their Excellencies' evident devotion of themselves in selfless activity to a multitude of local interests that evokes an unusually intense feeling of gratitude. They might well have set a stricter limit to what they deemed their duty in this way and still have earned the sincere thanks of Auckland's people, yet they have spent strength and sacrificed leisure far beyond the claims of legitimate demands, to an extent that has made all classes of the community realise that more than a sense of duty was in this manifold toil. And all has been done with a delightful touch of sympathy, in the truest meaning of the term; nothing, apparently, has been outside the scope of their own personal thought, no good cause alien to their purpose, no difficulty that they have not readily understood in these times of stress. Their gracious identification of themselves with the life of the city and its environs throughout this extended period will not soon be forgotten. They are proffered good wishes from all as they return to Wellington, especially a wish that they may soon come again.
