PARISH AFFAIRS

ST. LUKE'S, ROTQRUA ENLARGING CHURCH BUILDING [by telegraph—owx correspondent] ROTORUA, Thursday The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Luke's Church, Rotorua, was held last evening, Archdeacon F. W. , C'hatterton presiding. The report stated that the financial year in the parochial district had not ; been an easy one, and many appeals had been made to , meet the demands of the times. The Diocesan Synod last > year decided to make its financial year close,on June 30 in future, instead of March 31, so that the statement of ac- = counts covered 15 months, instead of 12. Consequently, it was difficult to. compare this year's financial statement with that of last year. The statement of accounts showed that the year commenced with a debit balance of £57, and for the 15 months ended with a debit balance of £99. The total receipts were £ll4l and the expenditure £llß3. - Archdeacon Chatterton, in referring to the spiritual side of the work of the parochial district, said thatr there were some indications of progress, and attendances had been good. Owing to considerable development taking place through the opening up Of the Kainga-

roa Plains, Galatea and the Atiamuri districts and the possibility of the pulping industry being established, with the present staff it was impossible to cover all those places, and it was their iiaten-. tion to bring the matter before the diocesan officers to see ■what could b© done for the settlers. His own idea was, that to meet present wants, a Church, Army officer should be appointed to carrv on the work. Mr. W. W. P. Hall, people's warden, placed before the meeting the vestry a suggestions regarding the proposal to enlarge St. Luke's Church at an estimated cost of about £3OO. The meeting approved of the vestry's recommendations, and it was decided that the work be put in hand almost immediately. The following officers were appointed: —Mr. J. Halkett, vicar's warden; Mr. \V. W. P. Hall, peoDle's warden: vestrymen, Messrs. L. E. A. Andrews, A. H. Fogein. G. H. French, J. AI. | Hemphill. W. A. Carter, W. Chambers, T. E. Ampson.
