WORK FOR DOLE

COUNCILS REJECT SCHEME The Bankstown Municipal Council and the Blaxland Shire Council have decided to reject the work for the New South Wales dole scheme. The Blaxland Council did so on the score of expense. It was decided to apply., for a grant of £2OOO for relief works. It is stated that for about £2700 the Bankstown Council would havo obtained work valued at £24,000 within 18 weeks. At its last meeting the council decided to borrow £OOOO, to he spent in ono ward, award wages to be paid, and one-half of the wages to be repaid in reducing arrears of rates. Bankstown has more than £220,000 outstanding in rates and is finding difficulty in raising interest on the present loans. Doubts are expressed whether aij additional £OOOO can bo raised.
