THE WORLD'S WOOL
PRODUCTION MAINTAINED In spite of five years of low prices the world's woo! production is being maintained, according to the first number of Wool Intelligence Notes, just issued by the Wool Statistics Advisory Committee of the Empire Marketing Hoard. Output in the southern hemisphere has not been reduced, the publication states. Consumption in the United States and Russia, both wool-importing countries, has been declining, and it is doubtful whether wool-exporting countries can look for any material extension of those markets in present conditions, in spite of the fact that domestic production in those two countries has declined —in Russia by about oO per cent since 15)29. Stocks which have .accumulated in the last five years in producing areas have been largely of coarse crossbrcds and carpet wools, the demand having been for finer descriptions. Shipments from producing areas in the current season have been 1G per cent heavier than in the previous season, however, and if the increased rate is maintained there should bo 110 further accumulation of stocks. In the present season it is estimated Australia, Now Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and Uruguay will produce about 2,050,000,0001b. (greasy basis), compared with 2,022.000,0001b. in 1931-32. The decline in United States production will probably be insufficient to outweigh" the increase in tho southern hemisphere countries.
