TREATMENT OF HORSES
INSUFFICIENCY OF FOOD FINES ON DAIRYMAN A plea of not guilty was entered by a Te Papapa dairyman, Hubert Thompson, in the Onehunga Police Court yesterday, to charges of failing to provide sufficient food for two horses and of working one animal with a sore shoulder. "One horse," said Mr. .T. J. Hollingworth, inspector for the Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, who prosecuted, " was rolling fat when lie got it, but has now gono to n shadow." Numerous complaints, he said, had been rcceivod of defendant's treatment of the horses, and it appeared that all the food they got was about half a sack of chaff a week. Thompson said that the horses were fed on chaff, oats and hay, but they had fallen away in condition during the winter. Mr. W. It. McKcan, S.M., inflicted fines of 20s, and costs, in default 14 days' imprisonment, on each charge. INFORMATIONS DISMISSED HAMILTON TRAINER CHARGED [FROM OUR OWN CORUESPONDKVr] HAMILTON, Monday A horse-trainer, .fames Pcrcival Thorpe, was charged before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Hamilton Police Court to-day, on two counts of omitting to supply a horse with sufficient water. Defendant pleaded not guilty. The informations wero laid on behalf of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Two witnesses gave evidence that a horse owned by defendant was kept in an acre paddock at Whitiora, and that it had received no water except that which was supplied by neighbours. x Defendant said ho paid a boy to water the lior.se, and the boy said he gave the horso water every day. The magistrate said lie did not consider the charges had been proved. The informations wero dismissed.
