RELIEVING DISTRESS
MT. ROSKILL ASSOCIATION A successful year's work in aiding distressed families in the district was rineaied in the report presented at the first annual meeting of tho Mount Boskill Welfaro Association last evening. The chairman, Mr. 0. SI. SlcCullough, said tho association's objects had been faithfully carried out. Coal, fuel, groceries and meat had been distributed from tho depot, and medical and dental attention had been provided. Clothing, boots, blankets and foodstuffs had been distributed at wholesale cost, and boots and shoes repaired at a low charge. The time-pay-ment system had been instituted so that needy persons could purchase goods oil small deposits. Of tho total sales on time-payment, amounting to £167 and representing 324 accounts, bad debts amounted to only lis. A total of 170 families had availed themselves of the benefits of tho depot, representing an aggregate saving to tho purchasers of £2lO.
.Appreciative reference was mado to tho work of tho sewing circle, and to tho freo medical attention given to distressed families by Dr. Margaret Knight and Dr. Allan Knight. Tho bal-ance-sheet disclosed a satisfactory position.
Tho"following resolution was passed: —'"That this meeting calls upon thu Government to provido forthwith adequate sustenance to enable relief workers to provide sufficient food and clothing for their dependants." .Mr. McCullough was re-elected chairman. APPEAL FOR CLOTHING WELLINGTON MEN AT WAIHI In responso to his recent appeal for a supply of boots and clothing for a number of relief workers from Wellington employed at Public Works camp No. 2, Whangamata Road, Waihi, Mr. A. M. Samuel, 1N1.P., has received a telegram from tho "Smith Family Joyspreaders," Wellington, asking for information as to tho needs of the case. Tho men, who arc in urgent want of clothing, arc not eligible for assistance front tho Auckland Metropolitan Uelief Committee, as they have not been employed in tho Auckland district for tho required poriod of six months, and sinco they aro employed in tho Auckland district they can receive no official assistance from Wellington.
