July 1G The Department of Agriculture estimates the 19.'W wheat production of 12 Northern Hemisphere countries at about 19 per cent less than that of 19!32. The United States leads the decline, while reports from Canada and Europe, excluding Russia, indicate a lowered production.
RUSSIANS SENTENCED CROPS UNDER-ESTIMATED TERMS OF FORCED LABOUR (Received July 17. 5.5 p.m.) MOSCOW. July 17 The Commissariat for Agriculture has announced that the spring sowings have been completed over an area of 232,000,000 acres. This is only 2 per cent below the area planned. A Riga message states that Zalogin, director of the Odessa Grain Trust, and three State farm officials were charged with under-estimating crops. They were sentenced to 10 years' forced labour in remote regions, and with the confiscation of all their property and the deprivation of civil rights for 15 years. Two others were sentenced to six and four years respectively. BRITISH HARVEST FINE CROPS EXPECTED GRAIN AND VEGETABLES (Received July 17, 8.20 p.m.) LONDON, July 17 The Daily Express says that British farmers are likely to have the best harvest for 10 years. A total of 1,500,000 acres has been sown In wheat. Other sowings are:—• Barley, 890,000 acres; oats, 1,580,000 acres; peas and beans, 270,000 acres; sugar beet, 356,000 acres (expected to average nine tons an acre); potatoes, 500,000 acres.
