MELANESIAN MISSION
NEW SOUTHERN CROSS LAUNCHING IN SEPTEMBER Advieo that the vessel being constructed in England to replace the illfated Melanesian Mission motor-ship Southern Cross would bo launched on September IG, after dedication by the Bishop of Liverpool, was received at the Auckland office of the mission yesterday. The Southern Cross, a vessel of GO tons, was wrecked on the island of Aneityum, in tho Loyalty Group, on November 2, when eight days out on her maiden vovago from Auckland to Siota, in the Solomons, which was to bo her base station. According to tho Southern Cross Log for April, published in England, the plans for the new vessel provide for a length overall of about 120 ft., a width of 28J ft. and construction throughout in steel. The journal stated tho order for building had been placed with Camrn el I, Laird, Limited, of Birkenhead, while tho services of Messrs. Flannery, Baggallay and Johnson, naval architects, had been engaged for the supervision of tho plans and the construction.
