VERANDAH POSTS BROKEN
JERVOIS ROAD ACCIDENTS FRIGHTENED HORSE'S CAREER Two verandah posts shop.j only a little distance apart in Jervois Road, Ponsonby, were broken as a result of .incidents yesterday. A runaway horse, drawing an Auckland City Council dustcart, bolted along Jervois Road about 8 a.m., and a heavy wheel which became detached from the cart struck a verandah post, snapping it cleanly. The horse, which had suddenly become frightened while the driver was sweeping the street, continued for about 300 yds., dragging the cart for some distance with one axle scraping along the road. At ono stage the animal appeared likely to charge a shop window, but veered toward the centre of the road at the last moment, and stopped, thoroughly exhausted. Several pedestrians had to dodge nimbly aside to avoid being hit by the wheel, which was not 6topped by its collision with the verandah post. It ran for a distance along one footpath before coming to rest in the roadway. The second verandah post was! broken following a collision between two motor-trucks near the scene of the earlier accident. A heavy lorry owned by Bycroft, Limited, struck the back of a parked van belonging to Mr. S. J. Marrn, of 42 Jervois Road, and the front part of the van was forced against a verandah post, which collapsed. Neither vehicle was damaged extensively. /
