Staying at Hotel Stonehursfc are Misses Blackwood Sewell, of Singapore. Mrs. 0. It. Birchall, of Devonport, has returned from a visit to Taumarunui.

Mrs. A. Williams, of View Road, Mount Eden, has returned from the South.

Miss Ina Wight, of Devonport, leaves to-day by tho Monowai for Sydney. She will proceed on a holiday visit to British Malaya and Siain.

A successful card afternoon was held by the Carlton Croquet Club, in the J.C.L. tearooms yesterday, organised by Mrs. A. Dukes and Mrs. Buckle. Bridge and five hundred were played. There were about 24 tables in use.

Miss Whitney (Auckland) thinks of spending a, few months with friends, and then yachting at Cowes with her brother, Captain Whitney, wrote our London correspondent on June 9. In the autumn she hopes to go to Jerusalem, Egypt and Ceylon.

Mrs. W. Brown was elected a lifo member of the Canterbury Horticultural Society at the annual meeting held last week. For many years Mrs. Brown has been chairwbman of tho women's committee. The president, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, remarked that Mrs. Brown had given the society valuable service.

Miss B. G. Vickerman (Nelson and Auckland) is making a brief stay in London prior to joining friends for a motor tour in England and Wales, wrote our London correspondent on Juno 9. They will time their arrival in South Wales to attend tho Eisteddfod. Miss Vickerman is making her headquarters in Buckinghamshire.

The members of the Takapuna branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union entertained the members of the Devonport branch on Friday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church hall. Mrs. Morgan-Richards presided. The Bible in Schools Enabling Bill was discussed by those present, and Mrs. John Cook, Dominion evangelical supergave an address.

, King Georgo's Hall, Mount Albert, presented a cheery scene on Saturday evening when the Mount Albert Scout Troop held another of its successful dances. The committee responsible for the evening's arrangements comprised Mrs. W. G. Gladding (convener), Mrs. F. Mcßride, J.P., Mrs. Halliday, Mrs. Singleton, Mr. Hulme, Mr. K. Holdsworth, M.C., Mr. Monkman, Mr. Ryan and Mr. Halliday.

Dr. Stearns, -who, with her husband, is paying a visit to New Zealand from Maui Island in the Hawaii group, is herself a geologist and greatly interested in her husband's researches. At a gathering in Dunedin she gave some enlightening information concerning lier early work in the geological survey and also talked about Hawaii and the problems which face white people in some of the islands there in the matter of educating their children.

The ex-university women of Whangarei met at the residence of Mrs. G. N. Morris, of Aubrey Street, Whangarei, when it was decided to form a University Women's Club. The club will meet once a month. The following officers were elected:—Patron, Mrs. G. N. Morris; president, Miss Cathie; vice-presi-dent, Mrs. J. F. S. Briggs; secretary, Mi ss lan McKenzie; treasurer, Mrs. Sligo; auditor, Mrs. Wynnard.

Members of the Mount Eden senior and junior branches of tho Auckland Hospital auxiliary met at tho Alexandra Home, Ellerslio, to inspect the new wireless set which has jusb been installed by tht) junior branch. Mrs. Hooton, president, spoke of the effort made by the junior branch and hoped the patients would derive great pleasure from the set. Canon R. H. Hobday responded on bohalf of the patients, afternoon tea brought a pleasant function to a close.

In aid of the Anglican Church funds, a modern extravaganza, entitled "The Rajah of Bray" was performed for a season of three nights at tho Ellerslie Parish Hall. Members of the Girls' Friendly Society ably interpreted tho various roles in the play, which was written and produced by Mrs. Charles Schmitt. "Tho Rajah of Bray" abounded in clever dialogue, and the gay frocking, excellent comedy and attractive dancing were notable features of the production. Mr. Arthur Prentico was leader of tho orchestra.
