SEARCH FOR SILVER

NORTHUMBERLAND LEAVES EFFORTS NOT SUCCESSFUL l An intensive but unsuccessful search for silver coinage was carried out on board the Federal Line steamer Northumberland, which sailed from Auckland for London on Saturday afternoon. The investigating party consisted of 30 detectives and uniformed officers ami 10 customs officials. The search took about three hours. Officers were on the wharf and on board the Matson liner Mariposa when she sailed on Saturday afternoon for San Francisco, via Suva and Honolulu. Passengers boarding the liner were subjected to a watch, but there was no search of the nature of that carried out on the Northumberland.

The police also did not carry out a search on the Shaw, Savill and Albion motor-ship Coptic, which sailed yesterday for London. The only watch maintained was the routine scrutiny on tho departure of an overseas vessel.
