CONVERSION OF LOANS

STATEMENT BY MR. COATES COMPULSION NOT CONSIDERED [HY TEL KG It A P FI —PItKSS ASSOCIATION*! WELLINGTChW Saturday In a statement issued to-day the acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. J. G. Coates, says' his attention has been drawn to reports in various paj'ts of the Dominion apparently founded on statements made by the Waipara County Council to tho effect that it had been advised that the compulsory conversion of local body loans was likely to be enforced by the Government. Mr. Coates said he desired to give these rumours an emphatic denial, as the question of compulsory conversion had at no stage been considered by the Government. The present response to the appeal for conversion of local body loans was so gratifying in the short period which had elapsed since the Loans Board issued its circular on May 11, Mr. Coates adds, that it appeared that the majority of local authorities were fully aware of the advantages to be gained by conversion.
