RECOVERY FROM CANCER

MILITARY OFFICER'S CASE

TREATMENT BY RADIUM

A former officer in the Royal Indian Marines who made a semi-official visit to New Zealand in 1901, saw its shores for the second time from tho Rotorua, which arrived in "Wellington from London last week. He is Captain E. ,). C. Hordern, who retired from the service twelve years ago after an interesting and active career. The visit of 32 years ago. Captain Hordern said, was made on the steamship Dirthousie, which carried a number of Indian marines and troops to Australia in response to an invitation to the Indian Government to participate in tho celebrations which followed Australia's declaration as a Commonwealth. At that time Captain Hordern held the position of first lieutenant. The then Premier of New Zealand, Mr. Seddon, was in Australia at the time and his invitation for the ship to visit New Zealand was accepted, the Dalhousie visiting tho principal ports in both islands.

Late in 1031 Captain Hordern says ho discovered that lie was affected with cancer and in October lie was admitted to the Mount Vernon Cancer Hospital, London, in an extremely dangerous condition. In January, 1932, he was discharged absolutely free from the disease. During this period his life was frequently despairAl of.

Captain Hordern, now well on the way to full recovery from the aftereffects of the illness, says he considers it no wonder that the doctors at the hospital consider his case their greatest triumph, and, indeed, one of the most important in the history of cancer treatment by radium. He is making the round trip on the Kotorua to shake off the few remaining signs of ill-health.
