JOHN GILBERT'S DECLINE
SEARCH FOR NEW ROLES John Gilbert arrived in New York recently minus his famous moustache and looking for a job. Of his intentions, he says " I have 110 plans." .Mr. Gilbert. then referred to his departure from Hollywood. " What started my so-cifiled decline," he said, ' was the terriblv unfortunate role in which I broke 'into talking films. The picture was ' His Glorious Night,' and I played a passionate love scene a la silent film. People just laughed. You could not blame them. " 1 said to the producers, ' For goodness sake withdraw it, and I will make you another for nothing,' but they would not and I just had to suffer. But I do not feel finished. I have health, vigour, and, I hope, my talent. Besides, those nice people who, the studios think, have had enough of me, have really made me financially independent." Now Mr. Gilbert is studying stage and screen offers and is looking for " sober, substantial roles."
