WHEN RIMA WAS UNVEILED
At a time when Epstein's latest creations in sculpture and bronze arc once more very much under discussion, it is interesting to recall an incident associated with the unveiling of his most famous work, tho image of Jlima, set up in Kensington Gardens, as a memorial to Hudson. As all tho world knows, Epstein's conception of tho lovely ethereal Rima, tho " bird-girl " of Hudson's immortal story, is vastly different from the picture which most people visualise of her. When the time came for tho work to bo unveiled, Stanley Baldwin, invited by the art enthusiasts who had chosen Epstein to do the Hudson memorial, went along and made a speech. During all his oratory the monument stood beside him covered with a sheet. Then he pulled a string. He looked at Rima! He stared! He still stared! Then ho said —nothing! Perhaps ho thought " If only I had settled tho American debt with this."
