AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY
DOMINION CONFERENCE AUCKLAND VIEWS ON REMITS Remits on the agenda of the annual conference of the Royal Agricultural Society, to be held in Wellington next Wednesday, were considered by the council of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday, with a view to instructing its delegates, the president, Mr. S. Austin Carr, and the secretary, Mi*. W. F. O'Donnell. The delegates wero instructed to intimate that it did not consider a remit, advocating a progressive reduction in customs duties on British-made goods, came within tho scope of the conference. The remit, sponsored by the council of the society, advocated the ultimate reduction to a point where the duty would disappear "in order to prevent any friction in trade with Great Britain over the quantities of our exports." Laughter greeted the reading of another remit, reading as follows: "That, as ability to pay is one of the main canons of taxation, tho present land tax be replaced by income tax." Freedom of action was accorded the delegates on that subject. It was decided to support a remit, expressing the view that it? would bo false economy to curtail entomological research at the Cawthron Institute. A Manawatu remit, to the effect that the conference should consider tho inadvisability of stock auctioneers being appointed . judges at future Royal Shows, will be opposed. Members expressed the view that the best men should be chosen, irrespective of whether they are stock auctioneers or not.
