BANDITS CAPTIVES

BRITISH OFFICERS' FATE HUGE RANSOM DEMANDED SHANGHAI. June 11 The fate of the British officers of the steamer Nanchang, who have been held in captivitv by pirates in the vicinity of Newehwang for nearly two months, is reported to be nearing a crisis. So far the negotiations have been left in the hands of the Manchukuo authorities, whose latest offer to pay a ransom of 30,000 dollars was scornfully refused by the bandit chief, who, notwithstanding that the authorities hold relatives of his as hostages, is demanding 1,000,000 dollars. The matter now passes to the Kwangtung military authorities, who, after consultation with the British authorities, have decided to envelop the pirates on land and sea and afterwards to send troops and aeroplanes to bring the matter to a speedy conclusion.
