AUCKLAND TROTS
ADAMS MEMORIAL CUP TWO KEWPIES MEET AGAIN ENAWAH'S GOOD PROSPECTS BY ABAYDOS Of the 11 entries for tho Adams Memorial Cup on the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club's Winter Meeting next week First Flight was tl«e only withdrawal, but the owner, Mr. Wilfred Johnstone, will be represented by Ennwah, who won three races in succession at the Cambridge and Northland meetings last month. TJie two Kewpies, Kewpie's Guy and Kewpie's Triumph, will nguin meet in the cup. and, as the owner of each pacer is confident that his representative is better than the other, the meeting between these two alone should be well worth witnessing. Also included in the field is Peter Pirate, winner of last year's cup and two other races at the meeting. Of tho four on the limit, tho Auckland Trotting Cup wir.ner Great Parrish would require only to reproduce his Christmas form to have a gieat chance of success. Fit and well, he would probably win outright, but since his cup victory he has not shown anything approaching his best form, and several other candidates will be supported with more spirit and confidence. One to make a strong appeal is How-pie's Triumph, who excelled himself by winning a double at tho Auckland May meeting, being excellently driven by J. Bryce. Kewpie's Triumph has since gone on in the right way and should strip very fit, while ho will again have Bryce's services. Peterwah is a good trotter, but, although track trials have forecasted a return to form, his recent racing displays have not been sufficiently impressive to indicate prospects of beating the best of the pacers opposed to him. At his best Direct Morning would be very difficult to beat, but since his breakdown in the Auckland Cup he has failed to reproduce his form. In the spring he raced like a really good one. and, if he has effected a come-back, he should be dangerous, especially on a soft track. The Probable Favourite Kewpie's Guy is nicely placed on 12 yards, and, in spita of her failure over two miles in May, she will probably start favourite. She is brilliant and has also proved herself a genuine stoyer. Her form in February was particularly good, and if she is produced at her best, she will take all sorts of beating. Peter Pirate, 24 yards, is entitled to the greatest respect, as he is a wonderful pacer under winter conditions. Last June lie was tho hero of the meeting with three wins and a third in four starts. He was very fit and proved himself an adept in heavy going. Although not long back at tho tracks, ho is making good pr.ogress and may improve sufficiently to have a reasonable chance of winning his second Adams Cup. Auto Machine has not been seen to the best advantage for some time. He has been racing from impossible marks, with the looser limits, but is now handily placed. Ho appears to bo better on top of the ground, so that his prospects will to a great extent be governed by the state of the track. The Auckland-owned. but Addingtonirained mare Mountain Dell, fresh from her Aldington and Ashburton successes, must "be considered dangerous. At her best she is a brilliant pacer and a few seasons ago she won several good races at Epsom on both soft and firm tracks. Her recent victories show that W. J. Tomkinson lias succeeded in getting her back to her best form. Comparison of Times Enawah, 48 yards, should tako a lot of stopping judging' by her high-claas performances at the Cambridge and Northland meetings. She is brilliant and has a twomiles dirt-track record of 4.21 1-5. Apart from this, she has proved herself a fine pacer on soft ground, so that, no matter what state the course is in, she is bound to be very dangerous. Jewel Pointer, once the idol of Epsom racegoers, is the backmarker on 00 yards. At his best hj( r/would have to be seriously considered, but it is doubtful whether ho can effect a comeback, and on his display at the May meeting his prospects do not look rosy. It is a fine field and well balanced, which will ensure a wide range of speculation. At this stage those likely to find most favour are Kewpie's Guy, Kewpie'a Triumph. Enawah and Peter Pirate. The following table shows tho handicaps and best placed performances of the cup candidates:— Handicap Best Time Place Direct Morning . . 4.30 4.82 1-5 1 Great Parrish .. 4.30 4.20 4-5 1 Kewp. The dirt track wa3 in good order and should provide splendid footing for fast trials this morning. Peter Grattan (E. S. Groat), accompanied by Prince Etawah for a mile, ran two miles in 4.50. At the ejjd of the first- mile, which occupied 2.30, Prince Etawah eased up. and Peter Grattan, going on strongly for the balance of the journey, finished his task well. He ran the last two half-miles evenly, each in 1.10. Prince Etawah shaped well without the hopples. Nellota (L. Mitchell) paoed freely over two miles at a 2.38 mile gait and appeared anxious to increase the speed over the final lap. She looked none the worse for her solid task on Saturday. Rio Grande (A. T. Newdick) trotted Bteadily over a mile and a-half iu 3.40. He ran the first mile soundly in 2.25. but was not driven out over the final section. Anthony's Gift (E. S. Groat) and Stannioor (D. Smith) were associated in a useful fask over a mile and a-quarter, which was run at a 2.30 clip. Stanmoor was sent an extra six furlongs on his own, finishing well and registering a 2.25 gait. Both*facers bear a bright appearance and are shaping up well. Auto Machine (A. Brown) was not troubled to run two miles at a 2.35 rate. He revelled in his task and was keen to hit out over the final circuit. Auto Machine ia improving with each work-out. _ Aerial Bell (C. G. Lee) was given useful jogging work. She is a lightly-framed mare nnd has not done any serious work since racing at the May meeting. A few sharp runs may see her show improvement before race day.
