BARGAINS AT AUCTION
GAS ENGINE BRINGS 15s THREE CHEAP HANDCARTS An accumulation of Post and Telegraph Department stores was sold by auction iu Christchurch last week. There was no reserve on tho 70 odd lots, and as a result some surprisingly good bargains were secured. Three motor-cars, three hand-carts, old telephones, a gas engine, an electric motor and a generator and tools innumerable were among the items. A Western Electric generator, "worth £10," was sold for the very low price of 7s 6d, while a Pelton wheel fetched 2os. An electric motor in good order went for 30s, while another one, burned out, sold at 255. When an opening bid of Is was made for a wire-winder, tho auctioneer was sarcastic. "You want the spindle in it," ho said. The winder eventually went for 2s 6d, two others fetching Is 6d and Is respectively, Three hand-carts, suitable for car trailers, fetched ridiculously low prices, two selling for 7s 6d and the other for 7s. A gas engine, which was not on view, but which was stated to be in perfect working order, went for 15s. It was stated that this gas engine was used in the department's workshop before it was electrically equipped. Bundles of tools, such as hammers, saws, chisels, screwdrivers, pliers and bits, went cheaply to eager bidding. A Baby Austin touring car brought £SO. A Ford three-seater, two Ford trucks and a Ford five-seater tourer sold at prices between £7 10s and £ll. Seven old telephones sold for about 2s each.
