LAMBS' LONG JOURNEY
TOTAL OF 330 MILES * SWIMMING THREE RIVERS An interesting story was attached to the marketing of a consignment of shorn fat lambs sold at the Addincton Kaleyards in Christcliurch recently. They were sold on account of Mr. R. Ritchie, of Bruce Bay, and came from the furthermost southern point in Westland, where lambs are fattened for Canterbury and overseas markets. They had travelled more than 330 miles. To bring the lambs to Addington, Mr. Ritchie had to drive them for two days covering about 23 miles in that time and swimming them over three rivers, to reach Weheka, 107 miles south of Hokitika. From Weheka they were conveyed 123 miles by motor-lorry to Ross and thence sent by rail to Addington. The greater part of a week was occupied in transit, and the cost was about 5s a head. The line comprised 158 head, and thev were penned at Addington in excellent condition. Tlie.y brought from 12s lOd to 16s 7d a head, and the line averaged Us 3d. O/lly four other lines in the market brought a hig'ier figure. Two years ago Mr. Ritchie brought his lambs to Addington in similar manner.
