SCHOOL AND ART UNION
GROUND IMPROVEMENTS APPLICATION OPPOSED ATTITUDE OF HEADMASTER [from our owx correspondent] OPOTIKI, Saturday A motion that the committee should apply to the Minister of Internal Affairs for a share in an art union, the money to be expended on improving the school grounds, caused considerable discussion at a meeting of the Opotiki District High School Committee. In moving the motion, Mr. C. Pipe asked that the secretary be instructed to apply to tho Minister. The motion was seconded by Mr. Burrett. The chairman, Mr. A. E. Payne, said ho did not approve of the idea and that the committee must be careful. ]f it did as was suggested, it would find itself up against a section of the householders who would not approve of such a thing. Mr. Pipe: But I do not see anything wrong with it. I guarantee there is not one man in tho room who does not have a ticket in the art unions. Tho Chairman: I think we ought to give the people the opportunity of helping the school funds before wo think of asking for a grant out of art union proceeds. The headmaster, Mr. Kibblewhite, said he was against such a step. "I do not think you would get it, and I would bo ashamed to bo connected with a school which had to thank tho proceeds of art unions for its improvements or anything else," he said. Mr. Dcbreceny moved an amendment that the committee take no steps for two months, until it was seen how the people responded. Mr. Burrett seconded the amendment, which, on being put to the meeting, was carried, only Mr. Pipe dissenting.
