PROSPERITY PROPOSALS
Sir, —Your correspondent H. Reimers says:—" There is no reason why the present generation should shoulder all the burden, and by distributing the repayment over 50 years, everybody will be more inclined to sanction tjis scheme, which might be termed a temporary inflation." Why should generations vet unborn be impoverished by taxes thrust upon them simply because of a depression in 1933? This depression is not an isolated affair; it is merely part of the natural cycle of good and bad times. Another depression will surelv come before the 50 years allowed for repayment. The difficulty of the present time has been greatly increased by the fixed burden of interest charges on debts which we wish had never been contracted. Is it fair that we should intensify the next depression simply because the generation of to-day is so spineless that it refuses to shoulder its own responsibilities and prefers to pass them on to its children? S.R.H.
