Peter Smith, a relief worker, was allegedly struck by a man in front of a hotel on the afternoon of the King's Birthday, and in failing he received an injury to his head, from which he subsequently died. On the following Monday Wilkinson, a freezing works employee, read the account of Smith's death and reported to the police.
