CONSTABLE ASSAULTED
CITY STREET INCIDENT THREE MONTHS IN PRISON Charged with obstructing and assaulting a constable while in the lawful execution of his duty and with using obscene language, Daniel South, aged 53, labourer, appeared before Mr. F. K,' Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday. He pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given by Constable Williamson that at about 9.40 p.m. on Friday accused endeavoured to prevent witness from arresting two men who were fighting in Victoria Street West. Accused struck witness and used offensive language. As a result of accused's intervention, one of the men witness intended to take into custody escaped. Accused, who was stated to have a number of previous convictions, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on the assault charge and convicted and discharged on the other counts.
Carl Bell Grey, a middle-aged man, who was arrested by Constable Williamson for fighting, was fined £l. On a further charge of drunkenness he was convicted and discharged.
