WINTER FARM SCHOOL

LECTURES AT HAMILTON DEVELOPMENT OF GRASS LANDS [from our own correspondent! HAMILTON, Sunday Instructive addresses are being given daily at the Waikato Winter Farm School at Claudelands. Among the speakers was Mr. A. H. Cockayne, assistant-Director General of Agriculture, who gave a lecture 011 grass land farming. He said there were 30,000,000 acres of grass land in New Zealand, 17,000,000 of which had been made by man and the balance by nature. Of these 30,000,000 acres there were 5,000,000 devoted to dairying and 25,000,000 to meat and wool production. Mr. Cockayne said the 5,000,000 acres given to dairying could be gradually increased to 8,000,060. The present production per acre was 801b. of butterfat, which could bo rapidly raised to 1251b., and more slowly beyond that figure by the scientific development of grass land farming. The control of rnammitis was the subject of a. lecture by Mr. T. A. Blake, Government veterinary surgeon. Mr. H. Goodyear-Smith lectured on seed certification. The speaker outlined the correct methods of acquiring certified seed and stressed tho importance of obtaining it. The students paid a visit to Arapuni to-day. Tho school will continue until June 9.
