WORK FOR BOYS

MANY POSITIONS FOUND NEED FOR CLOTHING "We have had as much success in the past week in finding positions for boys as, I believe, in any week of our experience," said Sir Joseph Smith at a meeting of the Boys' Employment Committee yesterday. During May work had been found for 112 boys, 51 in the town and 61 in the country. Applications from farmers totalled 107. Sir Joseph added that the special winter emergency scheme had stimulated interest greatly. Ho was glad, however, that farmers had not called on the committee for the weekly contributions of 2s 6(1 as the boys' wages, except in a comparatively few cases in which the farmers were absolutely unable to pay wages. Most of the boys were placed in positions that were likely to be permanent. The secretary, Mr. N. G. Gribble, reported that the matter of the boys' clothing was still causing some difficulties. In numerous cases ho had known of boys who were without adequate clothing. He had been able to arrange outfits, but ho made an appeal for more boys' serviceable clothing and boots. It was decided to approach the Unemployment Boad with a view to having a grant of boys' boots issued. ARCHBISHOP'S TRIBUTE NEED TO ASSIST YOUTHS ' A tribute to the, work being carried out by the Boys' Employment Committee was contained in a letter received by the committee yesterday from Archbishop Averill. "Your committee's programme for dealing with the tragic conditions of unemployed boys in Auckland during the coming winter seems to lie so sane that 1 have much pleasure in forwarding a cheque for £25 to help the committee in carrying out the programme," Archbishop Averill wrote. "T hope the public will realise the tremendous importance of helping the unemployed boy during the time of economic stress." It was decided to write to the archbishop thanking him for his donation.
