MODEL YACHTING

CONTEST FOR JACKSON CUP SUCCESS OF SEA SPRAY . A harbour race for model yachts was held on Saturday afternoon for a cun presented by Mr. li. Jackson. The race brought out 17 competitors and was sailed over a course of three and a-half miles. The conditions were ideal for niodel yachting, a light wind from the south-south-west and smooth water prevailing throughout the afternoon. Considerable interest was taken in the contest, which was won by Sea Spray, owned and sailed by the youngest skipper in the race. Master G. Broun, a boy of only 13 years. The course was from the starting line off Orakei Wharf, thence round Sandspit beacon, thence round Resolution buoy, finishing at starting line. This gave the boats a broad lead to Sandspit, a beat to Resolution and a run back to Orakei Wharf. From a good start Bullet. Hono, Ireno and Scout were first to draw clear of the fleet. Irene had a slight lead from Bullet as the boats approached the Sandspit, but when only a few yards from the beacon .Bullet took charge. A minuto later, however. Irene regained the lead, rounding the mark two seconds ahead of her rival. Scout was sailing very fast, but went tho wrong side of the beacon and lost time in returning and finally retired. Rounding the Sandspit beacon the times were:—lrene, 2h 45m 30s; Bullet, 2h 45m 355; Lois M„ 2h 46m 30s; Expediency, 2h f" 1 ;. Tho beat to Resolution saw Ireno and Bullet fighting it out for first place, with bea Spray holding third position. Near the buoy Bullet crossed to windward of Irene, but 011 the next board Irene headed Bullet. J assing the Resolution buoy the times of the leading boats were:—lrene, 3h 28m 30s; Bullet. 3h 28m 355; Sea Spray, 3h 30s; Jjois M., 3h 34m 30s; Ramona, 3h 36mt wilight, 8h 39m. Then followed Lone Star. Hono and Ace, a little further astern. Bullet sailed faster than Irene off the wind | and took the lead ten minutes after passing Resolution. Sea Spray held her position. but Lois M. had to give place to Ramona and Twilight. Tho race started at 2.26 p.m. The finishing tunes were:—Bullet (scr), 4h 355; Irene (13m), 4h 3m 19s; Sea Spray (33m), 4h 8m; Ramona (26m), 4h 12m 20s; Twilight (2Lm) 4h 20m 50s; Lois M. (22m), 4h 27m 7s •" Hono (21m), 4m 31m; Ace (21m), 4h 33m 48s; Expediency (16m), 4h 3Gm Ss; Lola (34m), 4h 40m 30s. Scout, Enterprise, Atlanta, Cannot 11., Unknown, Rona and Lone Star retired. The result 011 corrected times was:—Sea Spray (G. Broun, junr.). 1; Ramona (11. Willctts), 2; Irene (L. Pohlen), 3; Twilight (N ; Beetson), 4. The special prize presented by Mr. H, Duke for tho boat registering tho fastest time was won by Bullet, built and owned *<y Mr. C. J. Collings and sailed by T. Brown. Her timo for the course was lh 34 m 355. Mr. F. D. Pidgeon's motor-yacht Spindrift was flagship and the officials in charge of the racing were Messrs. W. A. Wilkinson. G. Broun and P. ,T. Webb.
