SHIPPING CONTROL
SHAW, SAVILL COMPANY NEW BRITISH HOLDINGS LONDON, May 21 The city editor of Ulie Times says that F urn ess Withy and Company, with its associated enterprise, the British Maritime Trust, has acquired a substantial interest in the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line, which was associated with the P. and 0. Line in the purchase of the Aberdeen Commonwealth liners in March last, thus establishing connection between two important British shipping groups. Mr. John Macmillan, who has for 2(3 years been identified with the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line, as manager, general manager and managing director, is to resign his chairmanship in favour of Lord Essendon, who is chairman of Furness Withy, but will continue as managing director. The ordinary shares of the Shaw, Savill Company are now held by the White Star Line, Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, Furness Withy and the British Maritime Trust. The two last named have large financial resources. Furness Withy increased its capital by. £2,000,000 in 1931, when the chairman emphasised the fact that this increase would enable the company to accept favourable opportunities of expanding its interests. The company at present controls services from Britain to America, South Africa and the East. This latest development means extension to other Empire routes.
