TROTTING NOTES
FORM AT ROTORUA GUID HAIRST FOR HASTINGS DONUM A USEFUL PACER
BY ABAYDOS
Tho four-year-old gelding Guid Hairst is racing solidly again for F. J. Smith, and. after making a very creditable showing in tho Henderson Handicap at Epsom against Wee Machine, defeated the latter in the two-miles raco at Rotorua on Saturday. Guid Hairst was driven a heady race and when it came to the real business ho ran right away from liis two opponents. Tho Triumph gelding will make his next appearance at tho Ilnwke's Bay meeting and should pay expenses on tho trip. Wco Machine, who has recently raced liko a good horse on soft tracks,. failed to handle tho firm footing at Botorua. and. while ho showed rare speed in patches, ho broko repeatedly and spoiled any chances he had. Tho eon of Auto Machine looked a picture and Ilia poor displays were very disappointing to his owner. Mr. C. Cowan.
To Mahanga, who lins shown excellent form this season, ran very much bolow his ■ best on Saturday and his display in the Rotorua Cup was not that of a sixth-rater. Ho did better in tho sprint raco, but when it came to tho final stages ho failed to show any dash and was well beaten. Although Donum failed badly at Cambridge in heavy ground, ho showed on Saturday that ho is a pacer of high calibro on firm footing. C. Moran's new charge may not do much good under winter conditions. ' but next season ho should bo seen to good advantage. With track conditions to her liking on Saturday, Edna Worthy never looked liko being beaten in the mile and a-quarter race, and over tho last quarter-milo the Travis Axworthy mare just played with the opposition. With a little moro age Edna Worthy should reach, a good standard up to middle distances. Nell Volo gave a finished display of trotting when she won the President's Handicap at Rotorua. Smith did not hurry tho American mare in tho early stages, but over tho last six furlongs she mado up her ground in great stylo and had tho issue in safe keeping at the homo turn, llor time, 4.46, was faster than that recorded in the cup by Guid Hairst, and Nell Volo could have gone a lot faster if required. No trotter in tho Auckland Provinoo has made such advancement of_ late as Wiriwhata, who both at Cambridge and Rotorua won his races in fine style. Last season he was an uneven-gaited trotter, but W. G. Stephens has him trotting solidly now and he will win more Taces. Wiriwliata 13 bred on great lines, being by Al Mack from Ginete, and was npme seasons back by his breeder for £5. , ~ , Kohewah, who raced successfully nt. Hawera and Cambridge, was not seen at her best on Saturday, breaking badly in each of her starts. The Petawah mare may bo feeling tho effects of the hard racing, and, if given a chance to freshen up. should do well again at Hawke's Bay. A novice pacer to attract attention at Rotorua was Tliora Thorpe, an aged marc by Our Thorpe from a Dictator mare. She looked n picture and at her second start paced freely and smartly into second place. The mare has only recently joined A. Ayres stable at Rotorua, and it speaks well for that trainer's attention that she was turned out in such excellent order with a few weekß preparation.
