LOTTERIES AND CHURCHES
Sir,—l am sure many who are active in church work regret the attitude ot Dr. J. J. North with regard to those correspondents who have opposed his views in tho above matter. Many laymen who aro in a position to see bevond tho surface know that the tendency to gamble is accentuated by the present economic position, for it is natural that those who see no other way of paying their way than by trying to get " something for nothing unless they are strong characters will do so. This is what one of your correspondents drew attention to and what Dr. North endeavoured to brush aside. If that worthy gentleman and other worthy ministers would sit down and consider that aspect they might come to the conclusion that they would accomplish far more by tackling the question at the root, that is, by preaching that aspect of Christ's gospel which shows how unjust the present system is. We are certainly not going to get very far by display of tho " one-way_ mind, lot alone bv unworthy and unkind personal attacks on opponents. Member Council of Christian Congregations.
