The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb, or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores. They are compiled by the Quotations Committee, Smithfield. To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values, one farthing per ponnd should be deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for the week, and are not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer. GOOD DEMAND FOR LAMBS The New Zealand Meat Producers' Board reports on tho London meat market as follows:—The tone of the market is greatly improved with advance in prices for heavy-weights. Mutton; In spite of lower prices the demand for wethers is poor. Ewes are quiet with trade slow. Beef: Beef is meeting with a slightly better demand. Porkers: The market is quiet with a poor demand. Baconers: The market is unchanged with trade slow. The Bank of New Zealand has received tho following advice from its London office'as at the close of business last week:—Wethers: Weaker values are ruling owing to lack of demand. Ewes: There is only a poor demand. Lambs: There is a good demand. The market is firmer for heavy-weights. Trado generally is brighter with a better demand. GOLD AND SILVER QUOTATIONS IN LONDON (Received May 21, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 20 Fine gold is quoted to-day at £6 2s 7d an 07..,07.., compared with £6 3s Id yesterday and £6 3s 2d on Thursday. Silver was quoted yesterday at 18$ d an oz. spot and 18 9-16 d forward, compared with IS 11-16 d and 183 d on Thursday. To-day's quotation for silver at per fine oz. is 19 ]5-16d, compared with 19 3-16 d on Thursday. DAIRY FACTORIES MANAGERS' 'ANNUAL REPORT The annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Dairy Factory Managers' Association will be held at Hamilton on May 31. The annual report states that it had been necessary to curtail some of the branch's conferences, but members had an opportunity of discussing problems at tho periodical regrading of dairy produce at the Auckland grading stores. A special notice to cheese factory managers states that a meeting will bo held in committee at Hamilton on June 2. The mooting will consider a number of questions submitted by farmers' organisations, other similar meetings being held throughout the Dominion. The 25 questions to be considered have a direct bearing on cheese quality and manufacture. They cover aspects such as dairy farm instruction, milk grading with differential payment, openness in cheese, acidity and waxing of cheese.
