WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED
DRAINAGE OF CROWN LANDS NORTH AUCKLAND PROPOSAL [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Saturday Accompanied by representatives of the Public Works Department, Mr. A. J. Murdoch, M.P., visited the Waipu and One Tree Point districts with a view to providing suitable works for local unemployed. A number of settlers are already established on Crown blocks at Uretiti, which is two miles north of Waipu. With a view to further improving their holdings it is necessary to put in a main drain through the swamp, and this drain would also open up several hundred acres of excellent peat soil. It is hoped to place the unemployed of the Waipu and Ruakaka districts on the work at an early date. The area of lupins and marram grass planted last year in tho vicinity of Ruakaka is looking well. Application is to bo made to the Lands Department for a further grant in order that this work may bo extended by unemployed labour.
