VISITORS ENTERTAINED lesson to both sides TRIBUTE PAID TO REFEREE The Australian Universities' Rugby team was entertained at a smoke concert last evening in the men's common rqom of the Auckland University College. There was a large attendance, including representatives of all the Rugby clubs in Auckland. Mr. H. Frost, chairman of the management committee, and other members of the Auckland Rugby Union, were also present. Mr. M:. Rocke O'Shea presided. In proposing the toast of the visiting players, Mr. K. Anderson, captain of the Auckland University College team, extended a hearty welcome to the Australians and on behalf of his elub and team congratulated the visitors on their display yesterday. Their style of play had ploased the Auckland public immensely, he said, and he felt sure they would meet with success on the rest of the tour. It had been stated that the Australians had come over to learn something, from New Zealand, but New Zealand could learn something from tho visitors. Tho match had been played in t.ho finest spirit. lho manager of tho visiting team, Mr. J. T„ Gunther, congratulated Auckland on possessing such a fine sido and on tho exhibition it had given. Tho cream of the universities of Australia was pitted against it, and tho success of Auckland said a great deal for the standard of football here. They had come across to learn, and had learned a. lot yesterday. Features were the manner in which the forwards kept together with tho ball at too and turned defence into attack, and tho long lineout, which was not used in Australia.

Mr. A. EI. Kennedy, the Australian s captain, in proposing the toast of the Auckland. Referees' Association, referred to the fine spirit in which the game was played, and said it was one of the best ho had ever played in. There was not too much whistle and both sides offered their thanks to Captain Wales for the excellent manner in which ho had handled them. Captain J. G. C. Wales said he had enjoyed with tho spectators the thrill of seeing; a great gamo of Rugby.
