GOOD LONDON SALES BRISK COMPETITION LONDON, May 15 At the London wool sales to-day 9233 bales were offered, including 1195 from New Zealand, and about 4224 were sold. The firm tone continued and prices further tended in sellers' favour. J here was brisk homo and Continental competition, and tho offerings were mostly absorbed. THE CITY MARKETS APPLES IMPROVE SLIGHTLY PEARS SLOW OF SALE There was a slightly improved demand for apples at tho city_ markets yesterday, some lines rising in value. Pears remained fairly slow of sale and prices were a shade lower. Passion fruit again sold at low rates. Mushrooms met with a ready sale at unchanged values. Good quality tomatoes brought better prices than last week. There was a fair demand for oranges, bananas and other Island fruit. Hothouse grapes mot with a better demand, prices improving slightly. Other lines were unchanged, with lemons still bringing good prices. Heavy supplies of potatoes were available. The demand was slow and values shaded by about 6d a bag. Cabbage and cauliflower were in reduced supply and prices for these showed a firming tendency. There was a fair demand for other vegetables, which were unchanged on sale. An average supply of poultry met with a fair demand, values being equal to late rates. Prices for eggs were unchanged. Silver is quoted at 18Jd an ounce spot and 18 5-16 d forward, compared with 18|d, both positions, on Saturday. Tho quotation for silver at per fine ounce is 19 11-16 d, compared with 20Jd on May 12. TALLOW MARKET UNCHANGED OVER-SUPFLY OF PEARS The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated May 13, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Tallow.—An auction will be held on May 17. The market continues quiet on spot and for shipment with no material change in values., Hemp.—The Manila market is active and tinner. "K" grade for May-July shipment sold at £ls, and for JunoAugust shipment £ls ss. Tho sisal market is firmer and good business has been done. No. 1 for June-August shipment sold up to £l6 5s and for AugustOctober shipment up to £l6 10s. The Now Zealand market is unchanged owing to the absence of demand. No first-hand sales reported. Fruit. —The Rangitiki and Coptic arc clear. The Port Pirie is at London and the Piako at Manchester. The bulk is sold. The Cambridge is discharging its fruit in good condition. Tho market is slightly weaker and a further decline is likely as a result of heavy arrivals of Australian and Tasmanian apples and oranges.
