VOTING BY CROSS

MOUNT ALBERT COUNCIL The merits alid otherwiso of the method of marking ballot papers with a cross, as against striking out the names of candidates not favoured, were discussed by the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening. The. Mayor. Mr. W. F. Stilwell, moved that steps be taken to secure legislation authorising the cross method to be usod by the council. Mr. R. A. Ferner asked whether the proposal was to make tho system mandatory or optional. He thought that on a simple issue with, say, only two candidates, it. was preferable to strike out the name of tho candidate for whom it was not intended to vote. The Mayor said he had in mind tho securing of discretionary power to uso the system. Unless they had power to uso the cross confusion might result in the future when voters were faced with more than one issue and two ways of voting. The motion was carried.
