CITY ASSESSOR CHOSEN

RESULT OF ELECTION SUCCESS OF MR. JARRETT A meeting of city ratepayers to elect an assessor to represent them on the Assessment Court was held at the Town Hall concert chamber yesterday. In accordance with the procedure laid down, the town clerk, Mr. J*. S. 'Brigham, presided, and 13G ratepayers were present. This was the first occasion on which there has been competition for the position, four nominations having been .received. These were Messrs. C. F. Bennett (previous assessor), I. B. D. Esam, F. A. Jarrett and H. E. Vaile. As the result of the ballot, the town clerk announced that Mr. Jarrett had been elected. ; The Assessment Court consists of a president and one assessor appointed by the Government and one assessor chosen by the ratepayers of the district. It is provided in the regulations that should there be no nominations for the position of assessor within the prescribed time, the local authority may appoint an assessor, while if only one person is nominated he is to be appointed. Hitherto the appointment has been left to the City Council. In the event of an election, as in the present case, only those on the valuation roll are entitled to receive voting papers, but each is entitled to only one vote. It was announced yesterday by Mr. Brigham that the highest number of votes had been received by Mr. Jarrett, whoso total was 101. This result would be notified to the City Council, which would make the apopintment. Mr. Jarrett, who is u resident of Mount Albert, stated yesterday that he had been in business in* Auckland as a valuer for the past 13 years and during the past five years had been specialising in Assessment Court work. He had previously had experience as a valuer in Australia. Mr. Jarrett was a member of tlio Mount Albert Borough Council, but was defeated at the elections on May 3.
