SHELTER FOR YACHTS
PROVISION ON MANUKAU
REQUEST TO BOROUGH COUNCIL
The question of closing Geddes basin rnd the building of a protecting .wall enclosing an alternative boat harbour on the Manukau was considered by tho Onehunga Borough Council on Mon-
da.v evening. A letter was received from the Manuka it Yacht and Motor-boat Club complaining that, owing to the wall not being completed, several boats had been driven ashore. The club urged the early completion of the wall in order to provide adequate shelter for the winter. The letter stated that with the prevalence of strong south-westerly winds heavy seas broke over tho completed portion of the wall and the safety of the craft became endangered. It was suggested that, by increasing the height of the wall the xlanger would be overcome. The Mayor, INIr. E. Morton, said lie thought it was a mistake ever to have built the protective wall and that the nnchorage was quite safe without it. "We used to carry on in heavy squalls long before the wall was thought of," ho said. The completion of the wall, however, involved a question of finance and he moved that tho clftb be advised that the council would deal with the request when tho estimates were being considered. Mr. A. A. Coates stated that tho basin haying been closed, members- of the club required protection for their craft equal to that afforded by tho basin.
The Mayor's motion ivas carried.
