'llie Chinese at Nantien-men, just south of Kupei-kow, sustained 3000 casualties in the past three days. The Japanese crossed the Luan River, carving their way through two divisions of Chinese troops. The Japanese advance south of the Great Wall through the Kupei-kow Pass is creating considerable anxiety lest eventually it should prove that the Japanese intend to capture Peking. The Japanese now aro advancing on Mlnyun on the Kupei-kow road, 40, miles from Peking which has been hurriedly thrown into a posture of defenco.

Sandbag barricades have been erected in tho principal locations in the city. At Nantien-men the Chinese fortifications have been completely obliterated by artillery fire.
