KAURI GUM INDUSTRY

MORE CHEERFUL OUTLOOK REVIEW BY ASSOCIATION In a statement the Kauri Gum Industry Association says:—"Although prices are very low, the outlook is more cheerful. There has been no further drop in prices in the past year and in the 12 months stocks have considerably decreased, both in Auckland and the country.

"Stocks held in Auckland aro not excessive and comprise about 50 per cent brown chips. Although the stock* of better grades are small, as there is very little demand at present, these are more than enough to meet the demand. Brown chips, nubs, B2 and brown s£cel are selling freely if tho prices are right. Chalk can only be sold if dry and at a low price. Bush is neglected and no improvement can be expected while the Eastern gums are selling at low prices. The better grades of black and white are selling only in small lots, as only small orders itre being received from time to time. It would need only a few fair orders to absorb the available stocks, and prices would have to increase to encourage further supplies. The same applies to No. 2 white, although stocks of this grade are more plentiful. "Prior to i ( J3O, the United States of America bought almost 50 per cent of our shipments, but in the last threo years they have bought very little. There aro signs of a revival in the United States of America and the last American steamer took a fair shipment. If this country continues to buy, we can look for a decided improvement, as stocks aro not excessive, and the production is very small. The supplies for May should be considerably smaller than last month, as in April two largo consignments that were held in the country were received."
